powering the nation’s largest lab
As the cornerstone of a $94 million energy conservation contract under the DOE’s TEAM Initiative, Nexterra supplied a complete energy-from-renewable-waste system for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This turnkey system delivers 60,000 lbs/hr of steam from fuel handling to the exhaust stack, allowing the nation’s largest science and energy laboratory to replace its natural gas plant and safely shut down four fossil fuel boilers.
Following a fall 2009 groundbreaking, Nexterra began installing its gasification equipment in 2010, and the plant commenced operations in October 2011. Performance testing in January 2012 successfully verified ultra-low air emissions, leading to final commissioning, full Department of Energy approval, and an official grand opening on July 19, 2012.
